As you know, Trident Books rarely offers other publishers' works for
sale. In the past, we have distributed the work of Heptangle Books and
the Latin edition of The Picatrix published by the Warburg Institute. We only handle what we feel is the very best. This edition of The Key of Solomon is certain to become a valuable collector's item, given the subject matter, quality of presentation and limited edition.
The book centers on a Hebrew manuscript entitled Sepher Maphteah Shelomoh
(Book of the Key of Solomon), which dates from around 1700. The
original manuscript was discovered in the library of a London Rabbi,
Samuel Marcus Gollancz (1819-1900), by his son, Hermann Gollancz,
not long after his father's death. Mr. Gollancz published his
preliminary thoughts and an overview of the text in 1903 in a booklet
entitled Clavicula Salomonis, A Hebrew Manuscript. In 1914 he published
a facsimile of the manuscript, along with a twenty-page
English-language Introduction discussing the text, under the title
Sepher Maphteah Shelomo in an edition of only 358 copies.
This new edition includes the full text of both of Gollancz's books, a
facsimile of the original Hebrew manuscript and a new Foreword by
well-known scholar of the occult Stephen Skinner
in which he explores the history of the grimoire in the light of modern
scholarship. Stephen Skinner is of course well known for his many
publications on esoteric subjects, including the highly-regarded
'Sourceworks of Ceremonial Magic' series which he and co-author David
Rankine publish under their Golden Hoard imprint.
The Teitan Press edition of Sepher Maphteah Shelomoh,
is a large quarto (11 1/4 x 8 3/4 inches, approx. 28.5cm x 22cm) 222pp.
(lxiv + 158pp). It is bound in high quality heavy blue cloth, with gilt
sigil stamped on the front cover, and gilt title etc. on the spine. The
book is in two sections; the first section is comprised of the
English-language Foreword and Introductions, and is 64 pages, printed
on quality uncoated paper for easy readability. The remaining 158 pages
(the facsimile of the original Hebrew manuscript) are printed on
special coated paper, which gives a photograph like quality to the
reproduction of the manuscript, with its numerous drawings of seals,
talismans etc. In keeping with tradition, the book has been printed so
that the English text, which is of course read left to right, is
back-to-back with the Hebrew facsimile, which is read from right to
left. All paper meets library standards of permanence.
This Edition is Limited to 358 numbered copies.
